The Strategic Protocol Compass is a framework I have developed to examine the invisible architecture of an international encounter—the conditions that influence how decisions, behaviours and signals may be understood before communication formally begins.

It brings four interconnected dimensions into view. Context considers the political, historical, relational and institutional environment. Cultural expectations shape how formality, recognition and communication may be interpreted. Status and authority bring attention to formal roles, hierarchy and less visible sources of influence. Consequences encourage consideration of what a decision may signal, strengthen, complicate or set in motion.

The Compass does not prescribe a universal formula. It provides a disciplined structure for considering how decisions may be interpreted before action is taken.

Together, its four dimensions support more deliberate judgement about how leaders communicate, convene, recognise and engage across cultures.
